The flourishing garden on Symphony of the Seas has over 20,000 plants, and its my favorite spot onboard

In:
10 Jan 2023

When Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas debuted in 2009, it was the first cruise ship in the world to feature a lush, open-air garden. Named after New York City's Central Park, it's one of seven (or eight, if sailing on the Wonder of the Seas) distinct neighborhoods onboard Oasis Class ships, and despite the concept being over a decade old, it is still one of the most beloved spaces on any cruise ship.

Symphony-Central-Park2

The other neighborhoods are Entertainment Place, the Royal Promenade, Vitality Spa and Fitness Center, Boardwalk, Youth Zone, and the Pool and Sports Zone. Aside from the spa, they all tend to have a more energetic atmosphere, which makes Central Park's peaceful nature stand out.

An upscale public area situated in midship on deck 8, Central Park offers restaurants, high-end shopping, and tons of plants, over 20,700 to be exact (talk about a Royal Caribbean delivering a WOW factor!). It even has more plants than the Great Pavilion Exhibition at the Chelsea Flower Show!

It's a place that makes you wonder if you're actually on a cruise ship.

However, you’ll never truly forget that you’re on one of the largest cruise ships in the world, as the laughter and music from the pool deck can be heard throughout the day, albeit at a lower volume than the top deck. All three waterslides jet over the edge, and you can look up to see the rushing of water with guests passing through.

Here's why Central Park is my favorite neighborhood onboard the Symphony of the Seas.

A floating garden at sea

indian-laurel-fig-symphony-of-the-seas

As soon as you walk into Central Park, you are greeted with vine-wrapped metal columns. As you continue along the pathways, you'll hear recordings of birds, crickets, and other animals while you pass tropical foliage, seasonal flowers, shrubs, and a variety of different trees, including young Indian Laurel Figs, Shady Ladies, and Buddhist Pines, all of which are housed in steel decks.

Signage helps to clearly identify the difference species of trees and plants, as well as their scientific botanical names, origins, and other fun facts that might come in handy during trivia one day.

SOTS-Star-Jasmine-Central-Park

While onboard the Symphony of the Seas, I learned that the Star Jasmine, an evergreen vine originally from China, climbs 40 feet up tree trucks, and Purple Showers are often referred to as “Mexican Petunias” due to the shape of their 5-petal flowers.

Dwarf-Tree-SOTS-Central-Park

Another fun fact is that the Dwarf Umbrella Tree, which is originally from Eastern Asia, can be used as a herbal treatment to provide relief for arthritis because the extracts serve as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent.

green-walls-central-park-symphony-of-the-seas

When you reach the middle of the park, you’ll find "green walls" covered in flowering vines and ferns that are five decks, or twenty-five feet, high, as well as beautiful fern-covered trellises (a great photo-op!).

During the day, it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll see one of the three horticulturalists maintaining the garden’s plants. On the second day of my seven-day itinerary, I saw two tending to the Croton shrub outside of the Cartier store around 10:30 in the morning.

What you won’t see, however, is the intricate system of irrigation, fertilization, lighting, and drainage that's required to help sustain such a unique venture. There's even a landscape specialist onboard!

Onboard "getaway"

Benched Nook SOTS Central Park

If you’re looking to find a place of sanctuary on your cruise, look no further than Central Park.

You won't find many rowdy children hanging out here during the day, as it lacks family-friendly activities, like the pool deck's Splashaway Bay or the Boardwalk's carousel.

Many guests find it to be an ideal place to escape from the crowds and settle down in the plush seating underneath the protruding glass-arched domes with a good book. 4 benched nooks, rocking chairs, and numerous tables are also available. Guests can also play a game or two of chess to test their strategic skills.

I've also seen passengers playing with a deck of cards!

You're never far away from a cup of coffee or tea to sip on, as the Park Café provides both during their breakfast and lunch services.

As this was my first work cruise, I found that working in Central Park was a great way to balance getting my assignments done and making sure that I was still getting some of the traditional cruise experience. I didn’t find it as distracting as the Royal Promenade, Boardwalk, or pool deck.

Plus, I was always guaranteed a seat, usually completely to myself. While it would have been nice to type away with some ocean views, I certainly didn't want to spend time scouring for a seat everyday.

Top-tier dining and bar options, especially at night

Chops-Grille-SOTS

You can find many of the specialty dining restaurants onboard in Central Park, including Chops Grille, Jamie’s Italian, and 150 Central Park, which provide guests with a more intimate dining experience compared to the Main Dining Room.

Plus, if the weather permits, you can choose to dine al fresco, which I highly recommend during dinner, as the evening is when Central Park’s true beauty comes out. In the center of the park, the neighborhood is lit up by the pink and blue hues of the Royal Promenade that escape through the raised glass domes, while the sides are lit by street lamps. You can enjoy listening to the relaxing live classical music on the guitar and piano.

SOTS Central Park at Night

At night, faux candles are places on tables that foster a more upscale, and perhaps romantic, environment, which is complimented by the increased ability to hear animal sounds due to minimal noise from the pool deck. Something on my bucket list is an adults-only date night in one of the speciality restaurants!

Central Park SOTS At Night2

Central Park also houses Park Café, one of my favorite complimentary dining options. I love the made-to-order salads and, of course, their infamous roast beef sandwich. I also think they have some of the better quick-service dessert options onboard, like this delicious blueberry streusel cake.

Park-Cafe-Cake-SOTS

It’s a great place to grab breakfast, too. I find that it’s much quieter than other breakfast options, like the Windjammer or even Main Dining Room, which sometimes had a 20+ minute wait on my sailing. I also like how they have fewer options than some of the other larger breakfast venues; I have fewer decisions to make before having my morning cup of coffee!

Additionally, there are three distinct bars in Central Park: Trellis Bar, Vintages, and the Rising Tide Bar. Even if you are eating dinner elsewhere, they’re still great places to grab a pre-dinner drink and soak in the nighttime ambiance of the neighborhood.

Conclusion

Symphony-central-park1

While kids and teens may find Central Park's relaxed atmosphere to be a bit boring compared to the thrills available elsewhere on the ship, it's a great place for adults to escape and "connect" with nature. If you're onboard during a port day, you almost feel as though you are in your own personal oasis!

Regardless of whether you want to spend extended time in the neighborhood or just walk through on your way from the aft of the ship, Central Park should be be on anyone's list of "things to do" while sailing on an Oasis Class ship.

5 things to love about Central Park on Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class cruise ships

In:
08 Feb 2018

When Royal Caribbean built its first Oasis Class ship, Central Park was one of the most distinguishing features to hit the cruise industry.  To this day, Central Park remains an incredible space on any cruise ship.

Stepping foot into Central Park, you will quickly come to see why so many others relish time spent in this Oasis Class neighborhood.  Central Park features a lush garden in an area about as long as the Royal Promenade and twice as wide. Here are five things that you will come to really enjoy about Central Park too.

The Flora

The most obvious thing about Central Park is that is literally covered in so many different kinds of vegetation.  Considering this is part of a cruise ship, and outdoors, finding a park in the middle of a cruise ship is pretty darn impressive.

From towering Cuban laurel and Black Olive to clusters of calla lilies and rabbit foot ferns, the park’s collection of plants is a mix of coastal and highland sub-tropical species from around the world that is well suited to thrive on Oasis Class ships' Caribbean itineraries.

A series of columns interlaced with vines is just one of the welcoming entry points into Central Park, and is elegantly landscaped with tropical foliage and seasonal flowers, shrubs and trees. Drifts of calla lilies among giant elephant ears, red ginger, rabbit foot ferns, banana croton, gold dust dracaena, and butterfly lily are some of the plant life guests discover. Impressive ‘green walls’ spanning 25 feet and five decks high hosts fern and a variety of flowering vines such as red and white Mandevilla, Clerodendron thomsaonaie, and Thumbergia grandiflora. The park also has changing displays of accent plants, such as birds of paradise and Spathoglottis ground orchids. Trees, some eventually reaching more than two-anda-half decks high, include cherry of the rio grande, podocarpus nagi, and amstel king ficus.

Book reading spot

Are you looking for somewhere onboard to enjoy a good book?  Central Park is a vastly underrated spot for breezing through your chapters.

It is the perfect quiet place onboard to "get away" and just relax as the world goes by. You will find benches and chairs throughout Central Park that can be a great area for sitting.  With Park Cafe nearby, you can easily grab a cup of coffee or tea and bring it to one of these areas to enjoy with your book.

Be sure to look for some of the more hidden sitting areas in Central Park, which add to the aura of feeling like you are in a park somewhere on land.

Piped in sounds

If you stop for a few minutes between checking out all the fun things to do on any Oasis Class ship, you might hear a subtle aspect of what makes Central Park such an impressive area.

Royal Caribbean actually pipes in sounds of crickets, birds and other animals to add to the feeling that you are in a park.  As the name implies, Central Park is named after the world-famous park in the middle of New York City.  Like any park, animals call parks home.  While Central Park on Oasis Class ships do not usually have animals living there (birds sometimes come and go from island to island), Royal Caribbean added their own sounds to the area.

If you happen to have a Central Park balcony room, they turn off the sounds at night to ensure a quiet evening of sleep.

Al fresco dining

Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class ships offer a tremendous amount of dining options, and in Central Park, you can enjoy many of these restaurants outdoors.

With warm temperatures nearly year round, enjoying your meal outdoors can make a lot of sense.  Rather than taking your food and then going up a few flights of stairs to the pool deck, you can step outside and eat with the sun shining right outside.

Chops Grille and Jamie's Italian/Giovanni's Table offer their own outdoor seating areas, which means you have the choice of dining indoors or outdoors when eating at those restaurants.

Nighttime

If picking which aspect of Central Park we love the most was a contest, nighttime in Central Park would win hands-down.

As beautiful as Central Park is during the day, at night it truly shines.  The area is lit up from all angles, which transforms Central Park into a nighttime conservatory.  The lighting accentuates the beauty of the area, so be sure to bring your camera to capture the stunning look.

Each evening, there is also live music performed in Central Park.  Whether it is piano or string music, listening to it while surrounded by a beautiful park is one of those "I can't believe I'm on a cruise ship" moments that can never be understood until you experience it yourself.

Video: Engineering Harmony of the Seas’ Most Distinctive Neighborhood, Central Park

In:

Winding along walkways and climbing up two living walls, the 12,000 plants and trees are undeniably the stars of Harmony of the Seas’ Central Park. But hidden below is an intricate system of irrigation, fertilization, lighting and drainage that keeps the foliage green and beautiful. In partnership with the park’s horticulturalists, a team of engineers maintains the steel decks that house the plants, and the lighting and speaker systems that create the unmatched tropical ambiance at the heart of the world’s largest cruise ship.

What you need to know about neighborhood balcony staterooms on Royal Caribbean's Oasis class ships

In:
19 Oct 2016

Among the many impressive features on Royal Caribbean's Oasis class ships, are two neighborhoods that offer a lot to see and do, as well as incredible staterooms that look into these areas.

Central Park balcony and Boardwalk balcony staterooms are a compelling choice for anyone looking at stateroom choices on any Oasis class ship, and here is the important information to consider when booking these kinds of rooms.

What is a Central Park or Boardwalk balcony room?

These neighborhood facing balconies are a balcony category stateroom that offer a balcony that looks towards either Central Park or Boardwalk, instead of a balcony that overlooks the ocean.

The idea was a first in the cruise industry because prior to Oasis of the Seas, balconies had never been internally facing.

The neighborhood balconies offer the same fresh air and light that ocean view balconies do, but with the opportunity to enjoy the ambiance of the Boardwalk or Central Park neighborhoods.  In addition, neighborhood view balcony staterooms tend to be slightly cheaper than ocean view balconies.

The exact size of a neighborhood view stateroom with balcony is 182 square feet with a 52 square foot balcony. Both types of rooms include twin beds that convert to a queen, a desk, sitting area (some with sofa bed), TV and minibar and a balcony with two chairs and small table.

Central Park balcony rooms are on Decks 10 through 14, and Boardwalk balcony rooms are on Decks 8 through 14.

Why might you not want to book a Central Park or Boardwalk balcony stateroom?

Other than what you can see from your balcony, the room experience between a neighborhood balcony and an ocean view balcony are pretty much the same. For some folks, a balcony without an ocean view is not desirable.

A common concern that we hear about is noise from the neighborhood impacting the guest experience. In our experiences, the ambient noise from Central Park or Boardwalk is negligible and does not bleed into the stateroom itself. Of course, if you desire the sound of the ocean with your balcony, that will be missing here. It is worth noting that Boardwalk balcony rooms can have more noise when there are shows occurring in the AquaTheater, but your stateroom location and noise tolerance will vary.

It is also worth noting in terms of privacy, there are neighborhood balcony rooms on the opposite side of the ship that will face your balcony.

What do neighborhood balcony rooms offer that ocean view rooms do not?

There are some inherent advantages to booking a neighborhood balcony room over an ocean view balcony room.  First and foremost, the price for neighborhood balcony rooms is often less expensive than ocean view balcony rooms.

Moreover, neighborhood balcony rooms allow guests staying in them to enjoy some great people watching opportunities and enjoy the general ambiance of the neighborhoods you can view.

Boardwalk view balcony rooms also have an added benefit of some offering full or partial views of the AquaTheater performances.

Differences between Central Park and Boardwalk rooms

As the name implies, the primary and most noticeable difference between Central Park and Balcony rooms, are the view.

Central Park view balcony rooms offer a view of the Central Park neighborhood below.  Central Park is

Central Park is one of seven distinct "neighborhoods" that help break up an Oasis class ship.  It is an immense area in the middle of the ship that offers a lush park for guests to enjoy with tropical plants, trees and walkways. Central Park features a lush garden in an area about as long as the Royal Promenade and twice as wide.  Central Park rooms tend to have a bit less noise from the neighborhood because there are no shows in this area (there is live music in the evenings), and there tends to be less guests hanging out in the area.

The Boardwalk neighborhood is reminiscent of the whimsical seaside resorts that dot the coast of England and the nostalgic boardwalks of yesteryear such as Coney Island. There is a carousel, restaurants and the AquaTheater stage. Unlike Central Park balcony rooms, there is a partial view of the ocean when facing aft, and some rooms even offer views of the AquaTheater (the more aft your room is, the better the chance). Because of the shows and the fact the Boardwalk tends to have higher foot traffic than Central Park, it can be a bit noisier than Central Park.

Summary

In the end, Royal Caribbean's neighborhood balcony appeal will depend on how you cruise. Do you like quiet time watching the sea, or enjoy arriving into port? Do you find the Central Park or Boardwalk neighborhoods particularly intriguing?

When you consider the usual less expensive cost for neighborhood balcony rooms and the new perks for neighborhood balcony rooms, it is a particularly compelling option. In addition, many Boardwalk balcony rooms still offer a view of the ocean when looking to the aft of the ship.

While neighborhood balcony staterooms do not offer a full view of the ocean, having a balcony, regardless of view, is still what makes a great cruise experience.

Royal Caribbean Secrets: Tony the Gnome on Harmony of the Seas

In:
13 Oct 2016

Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas is filled with a lot of fun activities, exciting shows and incredible dining choices.  The level of detail on this brand new ship is truly amazing, including one very small (and cute) bit of detail that is easy to overlook.

Hidden in the Central Park neighborhood, among the beautiful trees, shrubs and flowers, is Tony the Garden Gnome!

Tony was donated by Matt and Samantha Alexander, and have been adopted by the ship's horticulturist, Tom Brownlee.

Guests can find Tony under a tree, opposite the Trellis Bar in the Central Park neighborhood.  While not as thrilling as the ship's water slides, Tony is a great example of a fun hidden gem onboard Harmony of the Seas that you can visit once onboard.

Royal Caribbean's Central Park: Everything you need to know

In:
21 Jan 2016

An open-air park on a cruise ship might sound crazy, but it revolutionized the cruise industry when Royal Caribbean came up with the idea for a living park in the middle of its first Oasis Class ship.

Central Park

Central Park is now one of the prettiest and well-known areas on any Oasis Class ship.

Royal Caribbean's Central Park is one of seven distinct "neighborhoods" that help break up an Oasis class ship.  It is an immense area in the middle of the ship that offers a lush park for guests to enjoy with live plants, trees and walkways.

The name is based on the well-known name from New York City, and it's in the middle of the deck in the same way Central Park is in the middle of Manhattan island.

Central Park on Royal Caribbean

At its heart, Central Park is a public area on the ship that offers restaurants, shopping, galleries and of course lots of nature.  It is the perfect quiet place onboard to "get away" and just relax as the world goes by.

The Central Park neighborhood features a lush garden in an area about as long as the Royal Promenade and twice as wide.

From towering Cuban laurel and Black Olive to clusters of calla lilies and rabbit foot ferns, the park’s collection of plants is a mix of coastal and highland sub-tropical species from around the world that is well suited to thrive on Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas' Caribbean itineraries.

Trees, some eventually reaching more than two-anda-half decks high, include cherry of the rio grande, podocarpus nagi, and amstel king ficus.

In addition to the beauty of nature, you will find four distinct features of Central Park to enjoy.

Icon of the Seas aerial render from the aft

Royal Caribbean is also adding Central Park to Icon of the Seas, which will be the first Icon Class ship and first non-Oasis Class ship to have Central Park. Icon of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas will debut next year.

Which Royal Caribbean ships have Central Park?

Aerial of Central Park

You can find Central Park on these Royal Caribbean cruise ships:

  • Oasis of the Seas
  • Allure of the Seas
  • Harmony of the Seas
  • Symphony of the Seas
  • Wonder of the Seas
  • Utopia of the Seas
  • Icon of the Seas

Dining

Couple dining at Giovannis

Royal Caribbean offers some terrific dining options in Central Park, including restaurants and bars.

The ambiance of the park is meant to evoke the sort of place you want to go for a romantic dinner, or just a meal out with a group of friends.

Park Cafe

Restaurants in the Central Park area include:

  • Specialty Restaurants
    • Chops Grille
    • 150 Central Park
    • Giovanni's Table/Giovanni's Italian Table
  • Complimentary Restaurants
    • Park Cafe
  • Bars
    • Trellis Bar
    • Vintages Wine Bar
    • Rising Tide Bar

The various eateries and bars are located throughout Central Park, and give a feel of a neighborhood rather than the shopping plaza that the Royal Promenade tends to convey.

Most guests come to Central Park to enjoy food or drink, and for good reason.  The restaurants located in Central Park are among Royal Caribbean's most popular.

Staterooms

Central Park balcony

Another innovation that came with the Oasis class ships are the idea of having balcony staterooms that face inward instead of the ocean.

On Royal Caribbean's Oasis class ships, guests choose from Central Park cabins that have a balcony facing into the park.  This promises views of Central Park anytime of day or night.

There are 254 Central Park-view balcony staterooms and 80 park-view windows staterooms on the Oasis Class ships.

Central Park render on Icon of the Seas

On Icon of the Seas, there are 196 Infinite Central Park View Balcony cabins, 42 Central Park View Balcony cabins, and 45 Central Park View Interior rooms.

These are some truly unique cabins that give those that love the ambiance of Central Park a view to enjoy throughout the day.  Guests can enjoy fresh air like a regular balcony stateroom, but with a view that combines nature's beauty with people watching.

Entertainment

Nighttime in Central Park

You can find live jazz music in Central Park during the evening hours.

Royal Caribbean converted the Jazz on 4 clubs into a casino space, and as a result, moved the live music up to Central Park.

There are evening performances near Park Cafe, similar to the sets that would have occurred in the former venue. The idea is to grab a glass of wine and enjoy the open air musical performances in the evening.

In addition, a free tour of the foliage in Central Park is usually offered once per cruise with a landscape specialist to get a better understanding of how Royal Caribbean maintains a living park on a cruise ship.

Shopping

Central park at night

In addition to the great culinary and visual delights of Central Park, guests are sure to enjoy the various shopping options too.

Central Park also contains a number of shops and boutiques for guests to purchase souvenirs and luxury items while on their cruise (onboard credit does not spend itself, right?).

Shops such as Tiffany & Co (Oasis of the Seas only), Coach, Regalia (Allure of the Seas only) and Picture This are open for business in Central Park.

Central Park Must-Dos

Central Park sign

There are definitely some aspects of the Central Park experience that every guests should check out at least once on their Royal Caribbean cruise.

Go there at night

Central Park

While Central Park is beautiful at any time, we absolutely love how beautiful it is after the sun goes down.

At night, Royal Caribbean lights up Central Park with beautiful lighting that accentuate the beauty of the area.  Bring your camera, because the area really looks stunning.

Roast Beef sandwich from Park Cafe

Royal Caribbean's Oasis class ships offer  a lot of dining options, but a hidden gem has to be the roast beef sandwiches from Park Cafe.

These sandwiches are just amazing and no trip to Central Park is complete without one of these tasty (and complimentary) treats.

Take the tour

Central Park benches

Royal Caribbean offers a guided tour of Central Park that is worth doing.

In our experience, it is usually held on the last sea day and lasts about an hour.

The tour offers an interesting look at what it takes to have keep all of those plants and trees be so beautiful.

Central Park is available on Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas.

Everything about Royal Caribbean's Central Park View Balcony Staterooms

In:
19 Jul 2014

One of the many innovations on the Oasis-class cruise ship are the Central Park view staterooms.  This stateroom category is available on all of Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class ships and we thought it would be useful to look at what this stateroom does (and does not) include and why you might want to consider booking it for your next cruise.

What is a Central Park View stateroom?

The Central Park view stateroom with balcony is a balcony category stateroom but instead of offering a balcony that overlooks the ocean, this stateroom category offers a view of the Central Park neighborhood.

The idea was a first in the cruise industry because prior to Oasis of the Seas, balconies had never been internally facing.

The Central Park balconies offer the same fresh air and light that ocean view balconies do but with the opportunity to enjoy the ambiance of Central Park along with the people watching aspect.  In addition, Central Park view balcony staterooms are often slightly cheaper than ocean view balconies.

The exact size of a Central Park view stateroom with balcony is 182 square feet with a 50 square foot balcony.

What are the disadvantages of booking a Central Park View stateroom?

To some people, a balcony without an ocean view isn't a balcony so that may be an issue. In addition, overlooking Central Park can add some noise to your balcony experience.  We think the noise factor for Central Park balconies is not as high as their Boardwalk balcony brothers.

There's also less privacy with a Central Park balcony since there are other balcony staterooms on the opposite side of Central Park that face your balcony.

Summary

Central Park balcony staterooms offer the balcony experience for a slight discount and a great way to enjoy Royal Caribbean's magnificent Central Park neighborhood.

The opportunity to have a balcony experience but with a completely unique feel that is unmatched anywhere else is another Royal Caribbean benefit.  Staying in these staterooms gives you space and a different perspective.

While this balcony stateroom doesn't offer a view of the ocean, having a balcony, regardless of view, is still what makes a great cruise experience.
