Once you get onboard a cruise ship, every moment counts.

First-timers especially need to be mindful of their next steps—whether it's your first cruise, your first vacation with Royal Caribbean, or your first time onboard a particular ship.

When you first step up the gangway, there will be an overwhelming amount of new sights and sounds.

The following hours will be some of the most important of your cruise, setting the tone for the entire vacation.

If you don't do some things within your first few hours onboard, you'll risk ruining your ideal cruise.

A mistake during embarkation day could delay the ship from leaving port or cause you to lose your place at a specialty dining venue.

From meeting your stateroom attendant to completing the muster drill, here are the top 9 things you should do as soon as you board a cruise ship.

1. Find your muster station

Royal Caribbean's e-muster allows you to complete the majority of the safety process online.

Anytime before boarding on embarkation day, you can navigate to the safety section on the Royal Caribbean's app to view the muster drill lessons.

First, watch a short video on how to put on the lifejacket. Then, listen to the sound clip of the emergency horn sound, which shows you how to identify it.

The last step happens in person, once you get onboard the cruise ship.

As soon as you can, locate your muster station, which will be assigned according to your stateroom location and indicated on the SetSail pass. You can also see the location of the muster station on the app.

At the muster station, you and your party will check in with a crew member.

They will scan your SetSail or SeaPass to ensure that you've completed the e-muster drill.

After this, you're finished with the muster drill!

This is an essential step to do as soon as possible because the vessel cannot leave until every passenger has completed the muster drill.

2. Explore the ship

This is one of my favorite tips for orienting yourself to a new cruise ship.

Especially on Royal Caribbean's larger vessels, such as the Oasis Class and above, you should get the lay of the land right away.

Start by exploring different neighborhoods, or simply travel the decks from bottom to top and bow to stern.

This will make your entire cruise go more smoothly. You'll know where to find activities and venues right away, and you won't become one of those lost souls staring desperately at the maps in front of the elevators.

This is something I make an effort to do as soon as I get on board and finish the e-muster.

In fact, on the one cruise I did not tour the ship right away, I later found out that I missed an entire section of the ship—the part that held Schooner Bar!

I ended up neglecting several days of fun activities and nightlife, all because I hadn't explored the ship beforehand.

3. Eat lunch

If you're ready for a bite to eat when you get onboard, there are plenty of dining venues to try.

For complimentary lunch, more cruisers prefer the Windjammer, which has a varied buffet of food and drink options.

There's certain to be a dish for everyone, but it will get crowded around lunchtime on embarkation day.

For less-crowded complimentary venues, you can look for Park Cafe, Cafe Promenade, Cafe Latte-tudes, Sorrento's Pizza, or El Loco Fresh.

Guests who have purchased The Key can dine in the Main Dining Room, where they'll receive a free specialty lunch from Chops Grille.

Some specialty restaurants onboard will also have their doors open for lunch on embarkation day.

You won't need to make reservations beforehand, so these venues will be first-come, first-served.

You can dine at Playmakers, Sabor, Johnny Rockets, Giovanni's Table, Jamie's Italian, and Chops Grille.

4. Check on your stateroom 

When I get onboard a cruise ship one of the first things I do is check on the status of my stateroom.

Not only do you get to tour the room while it's all clean and fresh, but you also can set down your carry-on bags instead of lugging them all over the ship.

It's also worth going to your stateroom to check when it will be open.

Since staterooms are usually being cleaned from the last cruise of passengers, they aren't open right away on embarkation day.

A sign will inform guests when they can expect to access their staterooms; usually around 1:00 or 1:30 P.M.

Once the staterooms are open, you can grab your SeaPass card outside the door and use it to enter. 

Just like at the airport, when you go straight to the gate to confirm its existence, checking on your stateroom is an essential task when you first get onboard a cruise ship.

5. Change your clothes

Now that you've entered your clean stateroom, you'll also have a chance to change out of your travel clothes.

I usually wear long pants and sneakers for the boarding process, when I expect to be on my feet for at up to an hour.

But once I get onboard and the vacation has truly started, I want to change into shorts and sandals right away.

Those travel clothes can get sweaty and dirty, and start to feel uncomfortable onboard the cruise ship.

Since your larger luggage usually won't be delivered at this point (bags arrive later in the afternoon), this is one reason why we recommend you pack a change of clothes and a swimsuit in your carry-on bag.

6. Meet your stateroom attendant

On your first day of the cruise, you should also make it a priority to meet your stateroom attendant.

Your cabin attendant is responsible for cleaning and restocking your stateroom once a day (twice for suites).

Typically, they will stop by your stateroom on embarkation day to try to introduce themselves. 

They will ask what time you prefer to get your room cleaned, usually a morning or afternoon time slot.

I find this to be a key moment for embarkation day—you'll want to choose a time that works for your schedule.

Don't forget to also learn their name, so you can properly thank them for the work they'll do.

7. Make reservations

If you've purchased a specialty dining package, such as a 3-Night Dining or Unlimited Dining Package, you'll need to make your venue reservations once you get onboard.

You can go to any specialty restaurant to request your reservations. 

Just keep in mind your top picks and the times you'd prefer to dine.

We recommend doing this as soon as you board the cruise ship so that it's early enough to get your desired reservations.

Specialty restaurants can fill up fast, especially on Royal Caribbean's larger ships.

When I sailed on Wonder of the Seas, I rushed to book specialty dining as soon as I boarded and still had to be put on a waitlist for Izumi Hibachi.

Royal Caribbean has announced that guests will soon be able to book specialty dining through the online Cruise Planner. 

At the time of this article, that has not yet been made available.

8. Switch on airplane mode

Now that you're onboard, don't forget to switch your phone to airplane mode.

If you've purchased VOOM WiFi, this is a great time to log in and get your devices set up.

If not, you can connect to free ship WiFi which allows you to access the Royal Caribbean app.

Either way, you'll need to keep your phone on airplane mode as the ship begins to sail away from land. 

Keeping your phone on a cellular network will rack up insane roaming charges. 

9. Join the sailaway party

With all your logistics taken care of, it's time for the cruise vacation to begin!

Royal Caribbean ships will have a sailaway party as the ship begins to leave shore.

You can find information on the Royal Caribbean app or your Cruise Compass, but it usually takes place in the early afternoon on the pool deck.

A live DJ will play music, while crew members encourage everyone to dance and party.

Nearby bars will be open, with waiters taking drink orders around the deck.

It's an infectious moment of fun and the perfect way to set the tone for your cruise vacation.

What do you need to do before getting onboard a cruise ship?

Boarding a Royal Caribbean ship is different from other boarding processes, like on an airplane.

You're not just getting ready to ride a mode of transportation, but also entering your home for the length of the cruise.

There are a lot of moving pieces to ensure that passengers get on safely and quickly.

In general, you can expect embarkation day to go smoothly, and run a lot quicker than at an airport.

However, that doesn't mean it doesn't take preparation and effort to embark on your cruise.

If you're concerned about what to expect, this guide serves as your walkthrough of the entire boarding process.

From your online check-in to stepping onto the gangway, here's how embarkation day works.

Check-in online

About 45 days before your cruise, check-in will open online.

Royal Caribbean’s app and website provide an efficient guide to checking in online. 

Similar to how airlines provide online check-in, you can prepare for your cruise completely online.

Simply create an account on the app or website, and use your information to prepare for the cruise.

Check-in will involve entering identifying information, scanning your passport or ID, and taking a security photo. 

You will also add an emergency contact (someone who is not traveling with you) and a payment method for any onboard expenses.

Online check-in closes 48 hours before embarkation day. 

You can still check in at the terminal, but it is ultimately quicker and easier for you to complete it online.

Choose an arrival time

Once check-in is completed, you can choose an arrival time to enter the terminal.

The arrival times will be listed in half-hour slots, usually ranging from 10:30 A.M. to 2:30 P.M.

These arrival times are first-come, first-served, so the earlier you check-in, the more time slots will be available.

Most cruisers prefer to select the earliest time slot offered, as it gets them onto the ship faster.

Complete the health questionnaire

The health questionnaire, also known as the wellness check, will open on the app the day before the cruise.

A notification will pop up on the screen, and you can open up the wellness check by clicking on it.

These health questions vary depending on the requirements of the port you’re sailing from, but you should be sure to answer them truthfully.

Being dishonest can delay your boarding process or expose others to disease.

The questions at North American ports usually involve some variation of the following:

• Will you be 23 or more weeks pregnant at any point in your cruise?
• Have you experienced any of these symptoms within the past 24 hours: Fever Chills, Muscle Aches, Fatigue, Sore Throat, Nasal Congestion, Runny Nose, Cough, Difficulty Breathing, New Loss of Taste or Smell, Nausea, Vomiting, or Diarrhea?

After completing the wellness check, you'll have access to your SetSail pass, the digital pass that allows you to enter the ship on embarkation day.

From here, you can add it to your Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, or Samsung Pay for quick access.

If you are completing check-in on the Royal Caribbean website, you can also print out your Set Sail Pass.

Arrive at the port and hand off your luggage

Now you've reached embarkation day!

In preparation for smooth boarding, we recommend getting to the cruise port the night before your cruise.

That way, any traffic or delayed flights won't affect your expensive vacation.

As you reach the cruise port, remember to check which terminal your ship is located at. Royal Caribbean uses 1-2 different terminals, depending on the port.

When you arrive at the terminal, you will see porters outside accepting luggage.

If your bags already have printed luggage tags on them, you can simply hand them off.

If not, the porter will be able to add luggage tags that tell staff where to deliver your suitcases.

Porter services are free, but passengers are expected to tip $1-5 per bag.

After handing off your larger luggage, make sure that you have your travel documents readily available.

This will ensure a speedy boarding process when you enter the terminal.

Enter the cruise terminal and go through security

Next, enter the cruise terminal to begin boarding. Make sure that you enter the right queue for your stateroom—usually, there is a separate line for suites and a standard line.

After entering these lines, you will go through a series of security checks.

The number of security checkpoints varies depending on the terminal. 

At each one, they will usually check your passport or ID and your SetSail pass (located on your phone or printed).

Next, passengers go through a security scan. This operates much like the TSA checkpoints at an airport, but it is a little less intense.

You won't have to take off your shoes or take out liquids.

Simply send your carry-on bags through the X-ray scanner and walk through the magnetometer.

After this security check-in, you'll go through one less documentation checkpoint.

Here, staff will take another security photo of you if the one on the app seems outdated.

After this, you'll be good to board the ship!

Complete the e-muster

After you board the cruise ship, don't run off for a cocktail immediately.

Every passenger has to complete a safety drill, called a muster drill before the ship can leave.

The first part of this muster drill can be completed on the app anytime on embarkation day.

You'll watch a tutorial on how to put on a lifejacket and listen to a sample of the emergency horn.

For the second part of the muster drill, you'll need to find your muster station and check in with the staff there.

You can find your muster station on the app or your SetSail Pass.

If you have any further questions, Royal Caribbean staff will be everywhere onboard, ready and able to help you.

Royal Caribbean quietly introduced a faster embarkation process at one of its cruise ports, and it promises to get you on the ship as fast as possible.

Express Boarding first showed up in November 2023 on Freedom of the Seas as a test to prepare it for the arrival of Icon of the Seas in January 2024. When I sailed on Icon, I did not get the Express Boarding option, but I finally was able to get it for my 4-night Freedom of the Seas cruise.

There's no cost or "catch" to getting Express Boarding, but you'll need to complete a few pre-check-in steps in order to qualify for it.

If you do manage to get it, then expect the simplest terminal check-in process possible.

Royal Caribbean's check-in has always been quite easy, so why is it necessary to even have an express option? Essentially, it rewards those that do everything they're supposed to do before the cruise begins and keep those people moving through the cruise terminal faster. That keeps lines shorter for those that didn't complete the steps, and rewards those that did.

For the time being, Express Boarding is only available for Royal Caribbean cruises sailing from Terminal A in PortMiami.

How Express Boarding works

When I completed my health questionnaire the day before my cruise, I was alerted by the Royal Caribbean app that I had qualified for Express Boarding.

The app made a big deal of it, showing virtual confetti and updating my SetSail pass to show I have Express Boarding.

The instructions in the app was to bring all my travel documents and follow the signs for Express Boarding.

Once you get to the cruise terminal, look for the Express Boarding line.  It's one of the three "special" lines you can enter, in addition to the regular line.

I showed the port agent my boarding pass, which had the Express Boarding icon on it and he admitted me in.

When you get to the primary check-in area, there's a special line for those with Express Boarding. The idea is it's more of a checkpoint to verify you have everything.

The agent scanned my Set Sail Pass and my passport, verifying everything was correct.

I was surprised she took my photo again, but I breezed through check-in with no line.

After being check-ed in, you essentially rejoin the regular flow of guests. I went through security and then went to the boarding area.  Freedom of the Seas had already begun boarding, so I never stopped walking.

The process was very easy, and I went from being dropped off at the terminal with my luggage at 10:37am to boarding Freedom of the Seas at 10:43am. A total of 6 minutes, and that includes a quick check of my carry-on bag for a non-existent extension cord.

Even if you don't have Express Boarding, the check-in process is pretty quick.  The difference is you waste less time re-verifying things. Plus, your check-in line may be shorter with this option.

The only people that probably wouldn't care if they got Express Boarding are anyone staying in a suite, as there's a special line and check-in area for them.

How to qualify for Express Boarding

There's no cost to get Express Boarding, you just need to complete a few key steps.

First, you must use the Royal Caribbean app to complete all steps of your check-in.  You cannot use the Royal Caribbean website. Keep in mind it's only available right now at Terminal A, so only Freedom of the Seas and Icon of the Seas offer it.

Once in the app, you need to complete all the steps including scanning your passport.  You cannot manually enter information.

1. Scan your passport
2. Enter all personal and contact information
3. Take a selfie photo and upload it
4. Complete the health questionnaire 24 hours before your cruise begins

You won't see the Express Boarding option until you complete the health questions.  Assuming you did everything else, you should get confetti and a notification in the app that you qualify for Express Boarding.

How does a cruise ship rotate 9,000 passengers and 20 trucks of provisions over the course of 8 hours?

If you’ve ever taken a cruise before, you might find yourself wondering how the ship gets ready for a sailing.

Most cruises happen back-to-back, meaning passengers disembark on the same day new passengers arrive.

Between sailings, cruise ships have a single “turnaround day,” when the guests from the previous sailing are disembarking and the new guests are entering.

At a Captain's Corner event on a recent Anthem of the Seas cruise, a passenger asked how staff prepare for all the logistics of a turnaround day.

Captain’s Corner is an informal Q&A, usually held with the ship’s captain, activities director, and hotel director. 

Guests can pose all their pressing questions, and have them answered directly.

What goes on behind the scenes to get all the logistics in place?

A guest asked what goes on behind the scenes to get the ship ready for sailing. 

“It seems like a huge undertaking with all the logistics to get stuff onboard,” they said. 

Anthem of the Seas’ hotel director, Adrian Gheorghe, answered this question. 

Hailing from Romania, he started out as a cleaner and worked his way up through guest services over the past 21.

Gheorghe has served as Anthem’s hotel director for the past 6 years.

Anthem of the Seas is a large Quantum Class ship, measuring 1,138 feet in length, 136 feet in width, and 168,367 gross tons. 

“Originally, when we started building our big, big ships, the discussion was around how many guests we [can] have on board our ship,” Gheorghe said.

Anthem is capable of holding 4,905 passengers and 1,500 crew members.

The ship has 2,090 staterooms and 16 guest decks, so that’s a lot of space to prepare for a sailing!

“But it’s all about how you never feel that you’re sharing with so many guests onboard.”

Gheorghe explained that the ships are designed so that you never feel overwhelmed by the amount of other people onboard. 

Through various spaces and lines, guests are moved around so that there are never too many people in one area at a time.

On turnaround day, you’d never guess that almost 9,000 passengers are rotating off and on the cruise ship!

Cruise ships go straight from one cruise to the next 

Gheorghe said that turn-around day takes place over 8 hours, over which the cruise ship rotates about 9,000 passengers.

During this time period, the ship’s staff only have about one to 1.5 hours without guests onboard. 

It is “quite an intense operation.”

Several strategies ensure that guests aren’t packed together.

On disembarkation day, you’ll notice that departure times are usually very staggered.

Royal Caribbean divides guests into groups, depending on whether they are bringing luggage with them or receiving luggage assistance. 

Guests who are bringing their luggage off themselves usually receive the earliest disembarkation time, starting around 7:30 A.M.

With over 50 different groups departing at different times, Royal Caribbean can stagger guests and prevent a mass departure of almost 5,000 people at once.

The cruise line also asks guests to wait for their departure out of the stateroom, so that staff has time to clean and get ready for the next guests.

On embarkation day, the ship arrives at port very early in the morning and usually allows guests to enter the cruise terminal around 10 A.M.

Arrivals into the ship are also staggered over 3-4 hours, usually starting around 11 A.M.

Guests who arrive earlier than their scheduled arrival time may be turned away. This ensures that guests don’t arrive at the cruise terminal or enter the ship all at once.

Staterooms are usually opened for incoming guests at about 1 P.M. on embarkation day, allowing enough time for staff to thoroughly clean and prepare every cabin.

The ship also needs new provisions loaded on

Gheorghe called turnaround day “one of our most intense experiences,” saying that it’s a huge accomplishment that crew members can make the day move along efficiently.

“Over the years, we learned the secrets of how to be effective in rotating the ship and preparing it for our guests.” 

Gheorghe explained that they work in four major steps, prioritizing preparation in order of which areas guests see first.

First, they start by preparing the main public areas like the pool decks and Royal Esplanade, making sure the spaces are empty and clear.

Then, the staff focuses on the staterooms: cleaning the room and bathroom and replacing linens, like sheets and towels. Everything is sanitized in preparation for the incoming guests.

The third focus is on back-of-the-house operations, loading trucks full of supplies and provisions.

The cruise ship will load all the supplies needed to operate over the length of the next sailing, such as provisions, alcohol, technical equipment, and supplies like toilet paper. 

A fact sheet passed out during the Captain’s Corner event had information on how many supplies Anthem of the Seas uses in a week.

In an average week, guests and crew members consume:

• 15,600 pounds of beef
• 16,000 pounds of chicken 
• 10,517 pounds of pork
• 1,800 pounds of lobster
• 11,000 pounds of seafood
• 4,000 pounds of salmon
• 86,400 fresh eggs

• 16,500 pounds of flour
• 3,500 pounds of sugar
• 1,500 pounds of coffee
• 45,000 pounds of fresh fruit
• 62,000 pounds of fresh vegetables
• 600 pounds of fresh berries

• 18,000 pounds of potatoes
• 8,000 gallons of ice cream
• 8,000 gallons of milk
• 5,800 pounds of cheese
• 10,200 bottles of beer
• 11,500 cans of soda
• 2,225 bottles of wine
• 175 bottles of whiskey
• 550 bottles of vodka
• 18,000 slices of pizza

Gheorghe said these provisions require delivery from 15 to 20 full trucks.

“Why is it that we always load booze first? Quality control. We have to open all the bottles and make sure they taste good,” he joked.

Lastly, staff loads all the luggage from the arriving guests. Luggage arrivals are also staggered, and delivery can stretch into the afternoon. 

Gheorghe shared that a high number of trolleys are moving the luggage, at the same time that cleaning, sanitation, and other preparation is going on.

Boarding a cruise ship has become very easy, and while it might have similarities with an airplane, it's not as complicated.

The first day of a cruise is busy with important things to do during the embarkation process, along with a lot of excitement, anticipation, and plenty of exploring along the way.

Those new to cruising might be concerned about how long it will all take, and what to expect when you're welcomed aboard.

This will serve as a guide for what to expect so you know the important steps along the way.

The basics of checking-in

There three basic components to the cruise check-in process: pre-cruise, checking-in, and boarding.

Prior to the cruise beginning, you can complete the online check-in from the Royal Caribbean app.

Download the app and sign into your Royal Caribbean account. If you don't have one, you can create it very easily and then link your reservation to your account.

At 45 days before sailing, you can check-in.  It's a really good idea to do the online check-in because it will save you a lot of time later at the cruise terminal. If you do all the steps, you'll breeze through it later.  In my opinion, it's better to take time at home rather than when your vacation is beginning.

To do online check-in, you'll need your travel documents, a credit card, and be able to take a selfie photo.

If you skip any of the steps, you're just going to have to do it later anyway.

Equally important is to select a check-in time.

Royal Caribbean requires guests to have a check-in time as the window to arrive at the cruise terminal. The earliest times will go fast, so try to get a time as soon as check-in opens 45 days before your cruise sail date.

There's one more step of the check-in process, the health questionnaire, but you cannot complete it until 24 hours before the cruise.  So make a reminder to do that the night before the cruise.

When to arrive

If you're wondering what time to arrive to the cruise terminal, refer to the time window you picked at the check-in process.

This is the time you can check-in, not the time you'll board.  

When you arrive, the port agents may ask you what check-in time you have.  If you arrive too early, you may be directed to wait in an area until it's closer to your time.

The check-in time is an estimate, so don't sweat it if you're late. Royal Caribbean will still admit you, but do your best to pick a time that works for your schedule.

If you arrive on time for your window, it should just be a matter of parking your car and getting in line at the terminal.

What you need to bring to check-in

There's plenty you should bring on a cruise with you, but only a few items that are critical for the check-in process.

You can refer to our packing list for what you should pack overall, but you will need a few things in hand on embarkation day:

• Passport or other travel documentation
• Royal Caribbean app or a printed boarding pass
• Luggage tags printed and attached to your luggage
• A credit card

Be sure to keep these items with you in your carry-on bag, rather than the bags you provide to the porters to be delivered to the ship.

Checking-in

The second step now that it's embarkation day is to actually check-in for the cruise.

As you walk in, a port agent will verify you have what you need and a valid boarding pass.  This isn't when you actually check-in, but a step to ensure if you don't belong there not to waste any more time. It should be less than a minute to verify you're in the right place.

Passing through security is next and this is just like going through airport security.

You'll put your carry-on bags on the screening machine belt, and remove any metal from your pockets.  Don't worry, you can leave your shoes and belt on and it's okay bring liquids. Just make sure not to try to bring any prohibited items, or security will confiscate it.

Going through security could be a few seconds or a few minutes, depending on how long the line is. Security lines rarely exceed a five minute wait.

At this point, you're ready to actually check-in.  Most terminals Royal Caribbean operates from have agents with tablets that will process you, rather than having to walk up to a counter.

The agent will scan your SetSail pass on your app (or paper if you printed it). If you did the pre-cruise check-in earlier, than this is a matter of verifying everything you entered is correct.

Otherwise, the agent will enter the information for you.

If you did everything pre-cruise, this step should take a minute. If you didn't, it could take 5-10 minutes depending on how many people are in your party.

Boarding the Ship

This final phase of boarding a cruise has the widest possible time because of how many factors are in play.

If the ship is ready to board passengers, you could be directed to immediately board. Sometimes they will still send you to be seated so that groups can go up and board as not to overwhelm the gangway.

If the ship has not been cleared to start boarding, then you'll be sent to sit and wait.

A ship might not be ready for boarding to begin for a number of reasons:

• All the passengers from the last sailing have not disembarked yet
• Local authorities have not cleared the ship
• A technical issue preventing boarding

Unfortunately, there's no to know precisely what time a ship will begin boarding. It could vary from sailing to sailing.

If you check-in for your cruise in the late morning or early afternoon, it's probable the ship will have already been boarding passengers prior to your arrival. But a later check-in time means less time onboard on the first day, and likely a more crowded cruise terminal.

Getting to the terminal too early and you might be trading waiting in your hotel for the terminal.

Once it's your turn to board, you'll have to verify your sailing credentials one more time and then you can proceed aboard.

Usually there's an optional photo opportunity to stop at, but you can bypass it if you wish.

The time to get on is very short, and involves walking through a gangway to get there.  Think of it like a longer airport jetway.

Total time could be 10 minutes or up to an hour.

How long will it take to board a cruise ship?

Depending on how much you do pre-cruise and how efficiently the process is running overall, you could go from curb to ship in as little as 10 minutes.  Or it might be closer to an hour.

If you arrive before the ship has started boarding, you can expect at least a half hour. If other travelers aren't prepared or the system is wonky, expect that time window to grow to as much as 45-60 minutes.

In practice, Royal Caribbean has a very efficient boarding process, and it's been our team's collective experience that 10-20 minutes is the norm once you arrive at the terminal.  The key is to complete all the steps in the app pre-cruise to expedite everything.

Royal Caribbean's newest terminals are efficient enough to be able to handle 2,000 passengers an hour at peak times. The cruise line has a goal of getting passengers, 10 minutes from car to bar".

This is largely done thanks to facial recognition software that processes passengers quicker by eliminating paperwork and additional screening time. 

It looks like Royal Caribbean may have a new way to speed up getting you on the cruise ship.

Royal Caribbean has steadily worked on developing ways to make the check-in and it looks like a new option may be on its way.

RoyalCaribbeanBlog reader Bridgetbien posted a screenshot of a new Express Boarding option that appeared in the Royal Caribbean app.

The pass was available for the November 3 sailing of Freedom of the Seas from Miami.  Miami is also the same homeport that the new Icon of the Seas will use when she debuts in 2024.

After activating the Express Boarding option, the Set Sail pass turned purple. 

Bridgetbien reported they are staying in a balcony cabin and are Gold level in Crown and Anchor Society, so this isn't necessarily a benefit for suite guests or top tier members.

The new feature was activated after Bridgetbien completed the health questionnaire in the app, "We completed the health form and then the app showed confetti and balloons and that first screen popped up."

According to the pass, guests with this option can look for Express Boarding signs inside the Cruise Terminal.

Royal Caribbean has not formally announced this new Express Boarding pass option, and there's no clear indication who can get it or how to get it.  For the time being, it appears to be a limited test.

Not the first express check-in option

If a faster way to check-into your cruise sounds familiar, this isn't the first iteration.

In early 2020, Royal Caribbean began testing an Expedited Arrival option on select ships.

Guests that downloaded the Royal Caribbean app and filled out all the necessary information pre-cruise could qualify for an Expedited Arrival option.

Similar to Walt Disney World's old Fastpass system, guests with Expedited Arrival got to bypass the regular check-in line in the cruise terminal and instead walk through accelerated checkpoints to get onto the ship faster.

The new feature began rolling out to a few ships right before the cruise industry shutdown in 2019.

Following the cruise industry restart in 2021, Expedited Arrival was not seen again.

A long-running effort to make check-in easier

Royal Caribbean has been waging its own battle to make the embarkation day experience easier and faster.

In an industry centered around guest satisfaction and delivering fun, the check-in process has been a thorn in the side of that desire.

Royal Caribbean is fond of referring to its effort of getting passengers on the ship faster as going from "curb to ship".

Royal Caribbean was the first cruise line to implement facial recognition technology as part of the boarding process in select cruise terminals.

In fact, Royal Caribbean announced it would invest in facial recognition back in 2017 when they introduced a slew of new innovations coming to cruises over the next few years.

Prior to the pandemic, Royal Caribbean saw about 70% adoption rate of the cruise line app on a ship that had the app available. Since the restart of operations in 2021, the adoption rate jumped to the mid to upper 90s.

The day of your cruise has finally arrived! You are pulling up to the terminal and see the ship in the distance, only to be confronted by massive crowds waiting to get on the ship just like you. 

You do not want to spend your precious vacation time waiting inside of the terminal when you could be sipping on a cocktail on the pool deck or getting acquainted with the ship before sail away. 

Boarding early also allows you to enjoy a more leisurely lunch before the Windjammer gets crowded, as well as attend to some check-list things, including confirming dining reservations and signing children up for Adventure Ocean programming. 

If you plan ahead, you might be able to reduce the amount of time spent checking in and get to the fun stuff faster!

Here are 15 ways to speed up the embarkation process and board your cruise ship faster. 

Arrive a day early

If you do not live within driving distance and are flying to your cruise port, you will want to ensure that you make arrangements to arrive the day before the ship is scheduled to depart.

Aside from any delays or cancellations that could cause you to miss the ship, by being in the vicinity of the ship first thing in the morning, you can secure an early check-in time and have time to relax at your hotel beforehand! 

Reserve a suite

When you book a suite on a Royal Caribbean cruise, you are able to begin reaping the benefits before you even step onboard! The specific perks vary based on the ship and suite category, so it is important that you understand the differences if priority boarding is something you want to look forward to. 

All suites on Vision, Voyager, and Freedom Class ships get priority boarding as a benefit, regardless of whether it is a Junior Suite, Grand Suite, or Owner's Suite. 

Suites onboard Oasis and Quantum Class ships are part of what is referred to as the Royal Suite Class. All suites onboard are divided into three categories -- Sea, Sky, and Star -- that receive different perks. 

Sea Class guests, or those staying in a Junior Suite, do not have any priority boarding boarding benefits. Likewise, Sky Class suite guests are only eligible for flexible arrival. Star Suites are the only suites onboard Oasis and Quantum Class ships that guarantee expedited boarding. 

Print your luggage tags in advance

When you finish the online check-in process, you will be able to print your luggage tags. These tags are what help ensure that your luggage gets delivered to the correct stateroom, and by having them ready, you will spend less time outside of the terminal-- you can simply drop off your bags with a porter and go.

Note: it is customary to tip porters $1 or $2 per bag, so you will want a few small bills on your person!

If you do not have them printed and attached upon arrival, you will have to wait to speak with a porter, who will have to fill out a tag and attach it to your luggage before collecting it. 

To make this process even easier, you can purchase luggage tag holders on Amazon. That way, you do not have to worry about them getting damaged. 

Do not take big bags through security

Speaking of porters, they exist for a reason! Do not try and take your big suitcases with you onboard. While trying to navigate the lines, physical check-in, and security, it is inevitable that these bags will slow you down. 

Moreover, you do not want to have to worry about lugging them around the ship with you until your stateroom is available! You should only bring a manageable carry-on bag with you that has all of your essentials--you will not need all of your belongings the second you board. 

Have your carry-on bag packed and ready

Before you get to the terminal, you will want to make sure that you have a separate carry-on bag packed with your essentials, such as medication, travel documentation, boarding passes, valuable items, and more.

You do not want to be scrambling to pull these items from your luggage at the last minute. That might require pulling out tons of stuff and having to repack it on the sidewalk! 

The carry-on bag is also a great place to pack some items that will keep younger children entertained during the boarding process and let you attend to the logistics without any distractions. This might include some snacks, toys, an iPad, etc. 

Know your stateroom number

If, by chance, you forgot to print your luggage tags, you will have to tell the porter your stateroom number. Instead of lengthening bag drop off even more, have your stateroom number handy. They will use it to fill out a luggage tag and staple it to the big. 

Even if you came prepared with the tags, there is a chance that someone will ask you your stateroom number at another point during the check-in process. 

Plus, once you get onboard, knowing your stateroom number will help you locate your cabin. You will not find yourself in a position where you walked too far forward or on the wrong side of the ship. 

Purchase The Key

The Key is a cruise add-on that guests may purchase to unlock (pun intended) some benefits meant to enhance their cruising experience, such as priority access into the terminal within a specific time frame.

When you get to the terminal, you will be able to wait in an exclusive area just for those who purchased The Key where employees will handle your in-person check-in procedures. When boarding begins, you will be let on first. 

The Key comes with other benefits, too, that may help justify the extra cost, such as a VOOM Surf & Stream internet package. Sometimes, the price difference between purchasing an internet package and The Key is so minimal that the upgrade is worth it. 

Plus, you will also be able to drop off your carry-on luggage in the Main Dining Room and have it delivered to your stateroom, enjoy an exclusive lunch in the Main Dining Room featuring the Chops Grille menu and private time at onboard activities, and be one of the first people off with priority departure from ship-to-shore at tender ports.

Other perks include VIP seats at shows in the Main Theater, AquaTheater, and Studio B, as well as a private à la carte breakfast and choice departure on disembarkation day.

Strive to reach Pinnacle Club

Pinnacle Club is the top tier of Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor Society. To reach this level, you have to amass a whooping 700 cruise points! 

On embarkation day, Pinnacle Club members are able to arrive at the terminal up to an hour before or after their scheduled check-in time. 

Of course, there are other benefits that make reaching such a coveted tier worth the effort, including daily breakfast at a specialty restaurant, milestone certificates for free cruises, and others from lower tiers. 

Even if you are seemingly light years away from reaching Pinnacle Club, you should enroll in the Crown & Anchor Society, as you will start to receive perks after your very first cruise. 

Complete your online check-in in advance 

Weeks before your cruise is scheduled to depart, you will be asked by Royal Caribbean to complete your online check-in. Here, you will input your home address, travel documentation (i.e., passport or birth certificate), emergency contact information, take a security photo, and confirm your date of birth. 

Making sure that this is done in advance will speed up your physical check-in time at the terminal. 

Have all of your documentation readily available

Even though you will submit your travel documentation online, you will still need to present it at the port. Do not waste your time or hold up the line by digging through your carry-on bag for your passport or birth certificate. If it is readily available, you can move through this part of the check-in process quicker. 

This includes your Set Sail pass, too, as it will have to be scanned in order for you to board the ship! You will not get your physical SeaPass card until staterooms become available. 

Cruise with a passport instead of a birth certificate 

While you technically can use a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID to take a closed-loop cruise in the United States, it is recommended that you use a passport.

Having a passport means not only a simpler embarkation and disembarkation process, but it protects you against an unexpected situation that may arise during your cruise vacation, such as a medical emergency in a foreign country. 

When boarding the cruise, the port agents will not have to spend more time verifying your birth certificate, meaning that those with passports will be able to start their vacation a little bit faster.

Book private transfers

Making arrangements for a private transfer to the terminal will bring you peace of mind on embarkation day, especially if your cruise port is far from a major city (i.e., Rome to Civitavecchia) or airport. 

You will not have to worry about hiring a ride share service the morning of or hauling your luggage through train stations. You can enjoy your breakfast before your ride shows up at the requested time!

Plus, while cruise line transfers might seem convenient, they are often overpriced, and you will have to wait for the entire bus to fill up before you depart. 

Avoid peak check-in times

If you get to the cruise terminal around noon, do not be surprised to find that a large crowd has already gathered. While most cruise lines have implemented check-in windows to prevent this from happening, you cannot account for those who want to try and get on the ship earlier than they are scheduled to. 

Another way to speed up the time spent in the terminal is to select a later check-in time, as most people want to try and board as soon as they can. Do not, however, push this too far-- you might arrive to find that you missed the final call. 

Keep prohibited items at home

Before you are able to board the ship, you will be required to go through a security process similar to that at an airport. You will have to send your belongings through an x-ray scanner while you walk through a body screener. 

If you bring anything that is strictly prohibited -- like a clothes steamer, iron, alcoholic beverages (outside of one 750ml bottle of wine or champagne per person), drugs, candles, etc. -- this will delay your check-in process. Plus, you may even find yourself denied boarding. 

Before you leave home, read up on what is and is not allowed on Royal Caribbean ships and make sure that your packed belongings do not violate their guidelines. 

Finish the e-muster drill before you arrive at the terminal 

While completing the virtual muster drill in advance will not help you get on the ship any faster, it will allow you to spend more time on the ship doing what you want once you get through the boarding process, rather than watching a video regarding safety procedures when you would rather be getting a drink or exploring. 

Do not forget that you will still have to visit your physical muster station, though!

The first day of a Royal Caribbean cruise is an exciting time. Your vacation has just begun and you have an entire cruise full of discovering new ports, eating delicious food, watching top-notch entertainment, and relaxing by the ocean ahead of you.

While it’s tempting to get onboard and immediately start partying and enjoying the day, there are a few things you can do to maximize your time, money, and vacation time later on.

From arriving at the cruise terminal to making dining reservations, exploring the ship, and finding the best spot for sailaway, here are some of the best do’s and don’ts for the first day of your Royal Caribbean cruise.

Do: Explore your embarkation port

If you arrived at your embarkation port the night before, take some time in the morning on embarkation day to explore the city. Walk around South Beach in Miami, visit the Opera House in Sydney, or shop at Pike Place Market in Seattle.

Treat the morning of embarkation day as an extra port stop as opposed to waiting around in your hotel.

Do: Have required documents easy to access at the terminal

Be sure to keep items like passports, negative Covid-19 test results, vaccine cards, etc. easily accessible at the terminal on embarkation day.

You’ll likely be asked to show these items several times throughout the check-in process, so keeping them all in one place is helpful.

Do: Drop off luggage with the porters

When you arrive at the cruise terminal on embarkation day, leave your luggage with the porters. We recommend taking a small carry-on bag (backpack or purse) on the ship with you, but leaving bigger luggage with the porters.

Bags will be delivered to your stateroom later in the day, so you won’t have to worry about lugging your big suitcase or duffel bag around the ship. It's customary to give a small tip for each bag you leave with the porters.

Do: Pack important items in your carry-on

If you’re leaving your luggage with the porters at the cruise terminal, be sure to pack important items into your cruise carry-on. Passports, money, credit cards, medication, phone chargers, etc. should all be packed in a carry-on bag to ensure you have access to the items if your luggage encounters any delays getting to your stateroom.

Do: Bring wine, soda, or water bottles onboard

Royal Caribbean allows guests to bring two 750ml bottles of wine or champagne onboard per stateroom.

In addition, guests can bring up to 12 standard (17 oz.) cans, bottles, or cartons of non-alcoholic beverages like soda or water per stateroom.

Keep these beverages with you in the cruise terminal instead of placing them in the luggage you give to the porters.

Do: Finish the eMuster drill early in the day

Royal Caribbean’s eMuster drill is easy and convenient, so be sure to complete all three steps early in the day once you get onboard. Don’t be the cause for constant announcements reminding guests to complete the drill!

Do: Reserve entertainment

As soon as you get onboard, open Royal Caribbean’s app and reserve entertainment shows for the week. Not all shows require a reservation, but the most popular productions (Two70 shows, AquaTheater shows, etc.) will require reservations.

Our recommendation is to make entertainment reservations for the first day of the show each week. Shows can be canceled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, so making reservations for early in the week will ensure you have plenty of time to see the show if it has to be rescheduled.

Do: Make dining reservations

If you have a dining package, be sure to make reservations as soon as you get onboard to ensure you can select the restaurants and dining times that work best for you. You don’t have to visit each individual specialty restaurant to make reservations, as the crew member at one restaurant can make reservations for other restaurants onboard.

The only exception to this is at Izumi Hibachi/Teppanyaki. Reservations for hibachi can only be made at Izumi, so it’s a good idea to head there first for dining reservations.

Do: Pack a swimsuit in your carry-on

Pools, whirlpools, and water slides are available to use on embarkation day, and you’ll often find that they are much less crowded than other days onboard. Make sure to pack a swimsuit in your carry-on bag so you can start your vacation right away with a sunny afternoon at the pool.

Do: Enjoy lunch onboard

One of the first things many passengers do once onboard is eat lunch. Many venues are open on embarkation day, including the Windjammer, Park Cafe, Cafe @ Two70, Cafe Promenade, Sorrento’s Pizza, some specialty restaurants, and more!

Do: Confirm Main Dining Room reservations

While exploring the ship on embarkation day, be sure to head to the Main Dining Room to confirm your dining reservation and table. If you would prefer your own table but are seated at a table with other passengers, see if the staff can accommodate your request.

If you have any dietary restrictions that you informed Royal Caribbean of in advance, be sure to confirm that the request has been received.

Do: Meet your stateroom attendant

Your stateroom attendant will visit your cabin twice a day for housekeeping service. It’s recommended to meet your stateroom attendant on the first day of your cruise to introduce yourself.

Stateroom attendants will go door to door to try and meet everyone in the cabins they service on embarkation day, so take a minute to say hello!

Do: Check your cabin

Once cabins are ready on embarkation day, do a quick check to make sure everything is working properly. Test the lights, outlets, television, etc. If you need beds separated or have any additional preferences, make sure to let your stateroom attendant know.

Do: Walk around the ship

Taking some time to explore the ship on embarkation day can give you a better sense of what is available onboard and where everything is located.

Exploring the ship will probably come naturally throughout the day as you make your way to and from your cabin, the pool deck, lunch, entertainment shows, etc.

Do: Register kids at Adventure Ocean

Royal Caribbean’s Adventure Ocean programming for kids holds an “open house” on embarkation day where you can explore the facilities and sign your children up for Adventure Ocean.

It only takes a few minutes to register kids for Adventure Ocean, so it’s a good idea even if you aren’t sure that your kids will attend.

Plus, sending your kids to Adventure Ocean on the first day of the cruise can allow them to make friends right away, as the first day is a prime time for making new friends onboard.

Do: Unpack

Once your luggage is delivered to your stateroom, take some time to unpack your belongings. While it’s acceptable to live out of your suitcase all week, taking time to unpack clothes and other personal items into your stateroom’s closets and drawers can help you feel more “at home” in your cabin.

Do: Enjoy an embarkation day drink

Nothing screams “cruise vacation” quite like a tropical cocktail by the pool, and that’s exactly what you should enjoy on embarkation day!

After having lunch onboard, head to one of the many bars on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship to order a cocktail (or mocktail!) and get your vacation off to a fantastic start.

Do: Find the best sailaway spot

Each class of Royal Caribbean cruise ships differ in layout and design, so be sure to scope out the best sailaway spot on embarkation day to ensure you have the best views of your ship leaving port.

Here are some of our favorite spots for sailaway:

• Vision Class ships: deck 10 forward
• Radiance, Voyager, and Freedom Class ships: helicopter pad
• Quantum and Oasis Class ships: Solarium bridge wings

Do: Take time to relax

Embarkation day can be a bit hectic onboard, with thousands of passengers navigating their way around the ship. From getting through the cruise terminal to making reservations, completing the eMuster drill, and unpacking, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

Remember to take some time to relax on embarkation day, whether lounging on a pool chair, enjoying the hot tubs in the Solarium, or simply sitting in a lounge with a drink.

Do: Order multiple items in the Main Dining Room

One of our top tips about the Main Dining Room on a Royal Caribbean cruise is that you can order as much as you’d like. If you’re having trouble deciding between appetizers, main courses, or desserts on embarkation day, order multiple items!

After all, why choose between the key lime pie and chocolate hazelnut cake when you can have them both!

Do: Sign up for onboard activities

While most onboard activities do not require making a reservation in advance, there are a few that do: RipCord by iFLY, North Star, Zone Zero, and the escape rooms.

Open the Royal Caribbean app on embarkation day and make reservations for these activities to ensure you can select the date and time that works best for your schedule.

RipCord by iFLY and North Star offer both complimentary and extra cost options, so if you don’t want to pay for these activities it’s recommended to reserve the activity ASAP once onboard.

Do: Take a spa tour

The Vitality Spa offers free tours of their facilities on embarkation day, which can be a nice way to see what the spa has to offer and learn more about which treatments are available.

This is also a good time to confirm your existing spa reservations or book an appointment.

Do: Download the Royal Caribbean app

The Royal Caribbean app is an extremely useful tool on your cruise, as it’s where you’ll find a list of daily activities, your billing information, deck maps, and more.

Having the Royal Caribbean app downloaded on your phone in preparation for the first day of your cruise is recommended so that you don’t waste any time once onboard.

Now that we’ve reviewed what you should do on the first day of your cruise, let's take a look at the don’ts.

Don’t: Fly to the port the same day as your cruise

One of the most critical things not to do is fly to the cruise port on the same day as your cruise. Unexpected delays, missed connections, and cancellations are extremely common in air travel, so be sure to arrive the day before your cruise to allow for some extra wiggle room.

Don’t: Arrive at the port before your check-in time

While it is hit or miss whether a departure port strictly adheres to the scheduled check-in time you picked when checking in online, it’s still best practice to show up to port at your scheduled check-in time.

If your check-in is at 12PM and you arrive at 11:15, you’ll probably be allowed to board. If your check-in time isn’t until 2PM, however, and you arrive at 10AM, you’ll most likely have to wait a while.

Don’t: Go to Guest Services on the first day

Guest Services is an extremely valuable service throughout the cruise, as crew members can answer any questions you may have, settle billing discrepancies, etc.

On the first day of the cruise, however, Guest Services can be prone to long lines. It’s best to save any questions for the second day of the cruise or go to Guest Services during less busy times of the day such as during dinner.

Don’t: Only consider the Windjammer for lunch

While the Windjammer buffet offers nearly endless choices, it can be extremely busy for embarkation day lunch. Consider skipping the crowds and eating at another venue instead, such as Park Cafe or Sorrento’s.

If you are hoping for a more relaxed feel to embarkation day lunch, make a reservation at a specialty restaurant for a much calmer atmosphere than what you’ll find at the buffet.

Don’t: Leave your phone service on

Remember to put your phone on airplane mode before sailaway! Even if you have international service, it most likely does not count cruises into the phone plan. Avoid extremely high phone bills by placing your phone on airplane mode.

Don’t: Try to do everything

It can be tempting to pack the first day of your cruise with activities. There are so many fun things to do on a cruise, from watching Broadway musicals to indoor skydiving, bumper cars, zip lining, surfing simulators, mini golf, and more.

Don’t try to do everything on the first day, though, and remember that you can spread out activities throughout the cruise. You are onboard to relax, after all, so don’t make yourself exhausted by trying to fit everything in one day!

Don’t: Wait to book excursions

Every Royal Caribbean ship has a Shore Excursions area onboard where you can learn more about which excursions are available, talk to crew members specializing in excursions, and book tours for your cruise itinerary.

It’s recommended that you book excursions in advance instead of waiting to do so on the ship so that the excursions you are interested in do not sell out. While it can be helpful to talk to crew members about the tours in more detail, you run the risk of far fewer tours being available compared to booking ahead of time.

Many aspects of the cruise experience are going to change, including the check-in process at the pier.

Between what has changed with Quantum of the Seas sailings in Singapore and comments from Royal Caribbean executives, we have known arriving at the cruise terminal was going to undergo significant changes to spread guests out and ensure everyone is healthy to board.

Royal Caribbean recently updated its online check-in process, and some guests who have cruises booked for May 2021 are seeing some of the changes listed.

RoyalCaribbeanBlog reader Leroyr55 shared a screenshot of the check-in process that lists a few notable changes.

Wellness check

Guests arriving on embarkation day have always been asked some common questions about their health, but that process is now much more elaborate.

The wellness check is part of your pre-selected check-in time at the cruise terminal.

"We’re doing everything we can to ensure our ships sail with healthy guests and crew by implementing wellness checks for all guests."

Your arrival time is also when you take your pre-cruise wellness check.

What exactly the wellness check entails remains to be seen, but Royal Caribbean's cruise contract indicates it will likely include:

• Providing an accurate, truthful and complete health questionnaire in a form
• Pre-embarkation testing and temperature checks of each passenger

Negative test required

Another major step is a negative covid test is required when you arrive to prove you have recently tested negative.

"We require all guests to complete SARS-CoV-2 (rtPCR) testing prior to sailing and bring the results to the pier prior to boarding."

Royal Caribbean committed to fully testing all passengers and crew in October 2020 (along with the entire cruise industry).

The check-in process does not indicate if the test taken before you arrive to the cruise terminal will be paid by the cruise line or by the guest, nor where they can get one done.

On-time arrivals

Another change is the check-in times matter.

Before the global health crisis, check-in times were never enforced, but now it appears that has changed.

"Your arrival time is also when you take your pre-cruise wellness check. Please plan to get to the terminal during that time window - not before or after - so you board smoothly."

When you arrive at the cruise terminal for the first day of your cruise, there are porters waiting to take your luggage so that it can be delivered to your stateroom on the ship.

Should you use their services, and if so, what is the "catch"?

They're there to make things easier

Porters are a convenience meant to simplify the process of getting your belongings on a cruise ship.

Think of porters like curbside luggage check-in at the airport.  You drive up to them, drop off all of your checked luggage and they lug the bags to be delivered to the ship.

There is no fee for their services, but a tip is customary for their services.  Usually $1-2 per bag is what most people pay.

You will give them anything you will not need for the first few hours after getting onboard.  Luggage gets delivered onboard the ship in the afternoon and early evening, once it gets scanned by security and delivered to the appropriate deck.

Be sure that each piece of luggage is tagged with luggage tags. If not, a porter can provide one on the spot.

What if you don't use a porter?

If you opt not to use a porter, you will have to take your luggage by yourself through the cruise terminal and onto the ship.

Keep in mind your luggage must be able to fit through the security x-ray machine in the cruise terminal, so if it cannot, you will have to send your luggage with the porters.

After the cruise is over

Upon disembarking your cruise ship on the last morning of your cruise, there will be porters available to help you with your luggage.

Just like on embarkation day, there is no fee to use their services, but tipping is expected.

Not only will porters make things easier on you on that final morning, but in many cruise ports, porters have their own line for getting through customs which can greatly speed up exiting the terminal.

Should you use a porter?

I always use porters on embarkation day or on disembarkation for the convenience they provide at very reasonable cost.

For $1-2 per bag, it is a bargain to have someone else lift and drag my bags around. 

Plus, I have found porters to be invaluable on the final day to get through customs faster. In some terminals there are special lines for them, and even when there is not, porters often shave time off by knowing where to go and when to expedite the process.

All too often I see some family with all of their bags dragging them through the ship, into the elevators, and stacking them on the pool deck or in the Windjammer while they wait for the room to be ready. 

In short, the low cost of having to tip is worth using them.

Helpful tips for using porters

• Make sure your luggage tags are affixed to every piece of luggage before you get to the terminal.
• If you run out of luggage tags (or forget them), porters can provide ones for you.
• Luggage may not be delivered until the evening, so keep anything important with you (medicine, sunscreen, swimsuits, anything you need for dinner).
• Keep a few small bills for porters for easy tipping.
